I started piano lessons when I was just 5 years old! It might seem a little early to some but trust me it wasn't! I ended up taking lessons for 10 years and progressed to playing the flute as well. You might be asking yourself when the best time to start piano lessons for kids is, and it’s sooner than you might think! McKinlee will be starting lessons again this Fall and she'll be using our new Casiotone CT-S1 digital keyboard. I can't wait to share more about it below!
It's been said there is a window of opportunity between birth and age nine to develop a musical sensibility. During these years is the time to introduce a musical instrument to your child. At a young age they can further develop musical skills such as being able to identify a beat in music, melody, and differences in musical instruments. We had our girls attend music classes at the library and it helped them to develop an interest in music. That's not to say you can't start lessons and learn how to play no matter your age!
Memorizing music helps improve memory. Playing an instrument requires coordination and multitasking which challenges your brain! It's definitely a brain workout.
When I was taking lessons, I always took them in a group setting so it was a great way to develop social skills. I became very good friends with a couple of my classmates! Learning to play piano also helps develop patience, there was a lot of practicing that went into learning to play a song (hours and hours!). It helped me to develop patience.
Performing in recitals helped me to develop a sense of pride, accomplishment and confidence.
These are just a few of the benefits of learning to play the piano early on!
McKinlee will be learning to play on our new Casiotone CT-S1 digital keyboard. It's the perfect keyboard for anyone! The sound is amazing, and we love the minimalist design. It's available in black, red or white. It weighs about 9 pounds so you can easily bring it to any room in the house, out in the backyard or even to a friend's house to play! It really brings to life the concept of "Make Music, Anytime, Anywhere". We use batteries so the girls can take the keyboard anywhere in the house to play.
The Casiotone CT-S1 has 61 keys, built-in speakers, and multifunctional keys. Casio AiX Sound Source really makes sounds come to life. The clarity of the tones is unreal, you have to hear it yourself to believe it!
One of our favorite features is the many connectivity options with the CT-S1. You can connect via a micro-USB MIDI port, there is also a Bluetooth® adapter that can turn your keyboard into a wireless speaker! It really is the perfect keyboard for both casual play and for learning how to play.
Wired or wirelessly, you can link the keyboard to Casio's dedicated Chordana Play app to change the tempo or key of songs being played. In addition, you can display music scores and piano roll as well as switch to lesson mode. It’s been a while since I've played, I downloaded my favorite song to play, Für Elise. I put it in lesson mode and was able to have the app give me a little refresher so I could play along with it.
here is a peek at the app!
The Casiotone CT-S1 is $199.99 – a great price point for the features. This would make such a great birthday gift or the upcoming holidays!
Hopefully this post gave you some insight into the best time to start piano lessons for kids! I learned so much while taking piano lessons from an early age. It was great for my overall development and gave me a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence. At the time I was taking lessons, I didn't always love going to those lessons, but I'm super thankful that I had the experience and can still play piano today!
The Casiotone CT-S1 is the perfect digital keyboard for both beginners and advanced piano players. We highly recommend it! Feel free to comment below if you have questions or you can always DM me on Instagram!

The improved musical skill that a child can learn from piano lessons really interested me. My son has been showing more and more interest in music as a hobby, so these benefits might really help him take off in the future. As soon as I find a private piano lesson source in the area, I'll have my son visit them and take classes right away.
