Traveling to Maui with Two Kids under Three

The last time we were in Maui was for our honeymoon!  Ryan and I knew going into this trip that it wouldn't be quite as relaxing with our two kiddos in tow.  We decided to go into it with low expectations and if we could just relax (at least a little) and hang at the pool/beach we'd be happy!  Our family ended up having an amazing time and I thought I'd share some photos and give you a few tips we found along the way.  For more travel tips on a previous trip we took, see this post!

Where to Stay

We have always stayed on Kaanapali beach which is on the West side of the island.  There are a ton of amazing resorts and it is just a few miles away from the historic Lahaina town.  There really is so much to do in that one little area that you would be just fine staying there the entire time you were visiting.  For our honeymoon, we stayed at the Westin which I highly recommend.  They have an amazing pool and it's very kid friendly.  They have flamingos in their lobby!  This trip we spent our first night at the Sheraton which I also highly recommend.  It also has a gorgeous pool, but if I had to pick I would probably choose the Westin because their pool was just a little nicer and a little more kid friendly (more slides!).  The Sheraton's beach is also quite crowded as it has a public parking area near by and is home to the famous black rock where you can snorkel.  The beach in front of the Westin was very quiet.

For the remainder of our trip, we rented a condo through VRBO and it was the best decision.  I'd be happy to send you to the exact one we rented (ocean views and right in front of the pool!).  It had a separate bedroom so we could put the girls to sleep and stay up and hang out on the lanai.  I can't imagine spending the entire week in one hotel room!  The cost was actually less than staying in a hotel.  There was a full kitchen so we were able to grocery shop to save a little money.

Where to Eat

Oh the food in Maui is so, so good!  We ate at some amazing spots.  Our favorite restaurant is Mama's Fish House in Paia on the North side of the island.  I would suggest not going with kids if possible because it's pretty expensive (we ordered one kids meal to split and it was $25 and I'm pretty sure they ate two bites of rice).  The views of the sunset are perfect.  This sounds totally random, but we love poke so much and it is so expensive when ordering at a restaurant.  We go to the local grocery store and purchase it at the seafood counter.  It's so amazing!  We'll do that and eat it for lunch between the pool/beach.  Our other favorite restaurants in the Kaanapali area are Maui Brewing (no view, but the food and obviously the beer are amazing), Hula Grill (amazing view of the sunset, they have a great happy hour, and they have live music and hula dancers), and Frida's in Lahaina for super fresh Mexican food and the restaurant is right on the ocean.  For shave ice, you HAVE to go to Ululani's in Lahaina.  We tried another one and it just didn't compare.

For breakfast, we mainly ate at home but we did make it out to Slappy Cakes which was so fun!  We actually have one here in Portland, but I'd highly recommend checking out the one in Maui if you go.  There is a griddle in the middle of the table and you can order pancake batter and toppings to make your own.  Super fun for kids!

Favorite Beaches

Kaanapali beach is beautiful, but the waves can be pretty rough for little ones.  I was constantly terrified that a wave was going to sweep them away.  There is a beach that we actually never made it to called Baby Beach that is supposed to be great for, you guessed it, babies!  However, they don't have showers or restrooms nearby so we decided to skip it.  Parking was also difficult.  I was bound and determined to see sea turtles on this trip and that we did.  We headed to Ho'okipa Beach Park in Paia which is known for their turtles.  There is a ton of parking, covered tables, showers and restrooms.  When you get out on to the beach, make sure to go all the way to the right side of the beach which is where you'll find a dedicated turtle resting area!  There was a turtle waiting for us there.  They go in and out all day.  We saw 4 when we were there. The water was right off of a reef so it was really calm and great for our girls.  Websites actually say it isn't swimming friendly, but when we went it was amazing and calm.

Things to Do

I would highly recommend renting a car, as the public transportation is lacking and things are pretty spread out.  We took off heading North from Kaanapali to find the heart shaped rock/blow hole and found it easily (along the majorly winding roads), however we were wearing flip flops and didn't feel great about going down there with the girls.  It was still pretty to see!  On our way back, we stopped at Honolua Bay (to use the restrooms!) and ended up walking down to the water.  It was such a beautiful hike and easy for little ones!  There is also an amazing fresh juice/smoothie stand right across the street from the parking area.  We also loved spending some time in Pa'ia.  There are a ton of cute shops and restaurants.  Our next favorite spot was "hiking" twin falls.  It literally took us 10 minutes from the parking lot to the falls so I can't really call it a hike, but it was super easy for the girls.  It's on the way to the Road to Hana which we drove a little bit of.

I will always find pink walls

We received this flamingo stroller from Cosatto and the girls were obsessed.  We didn't want to take our double stroller because it just takes up too much room.  This was perfect and super cute for the island.  It folds up compact, steers easily, is light, and it reclines all the way down for napping on the go.  It has adjustable height handle bars and the seat is removable for cleaning!  I highly recommend it.
