Visiting Cannon Beach Oregon with Kids

Cannon Beach is by far my favorite beach in all of Oregon!  I have been visiting this spot since I was a newborn (seriously, my family took me here when I was just a few weeks old).  We brought both McKinlee and Madison to Cannon Beach when they were around 4 weeks old too.  Visiting Cannon Beach Oregon with kids can be such a fun adventure!  It's a quick 1.5-2 hour drive from Portland (depending on traffic) and the drive is really pretty.  We thought it would be fun to put together a list of our favorite things to do/see/eat in Cannon Beach since we've been going so often!  Check out our beach trip essentials post here!

Visiting Cannon Beach with Kids

I'm going to let you in on a super secret spot at Cannon Beach that makes visiting the beach with kids SO fun.  We always head to this spot first to let the girls play on the beach after a long car ride.  There is parking and restrooms along with a picnic area (if you want to pack your own lunch and not eat on the beach).  If you are driving on HWY 101, take the first exit to Cannon Beach.  Then, you'll take the very first right, and then the very next left.  The park is called Les Shirley park if you wanted to put it in Google maps.  You'll see a path that heads down to the beach.  You can set up your beach stuff right by the creek.  Kids can play in the calm water or easily get their buckets filled for sand castle building.  It's also a short 5 minute walk to the actual ocean.

Our Favorite Spots at Cannon Beach

I wanted to list out our favorite spots at Cannon Beach so you can make sure to hit them up on your next visit!

  1. Bruces Candy Kitchen: First of all, their candy is amazing and they have so many fun nostalgic candies.   Secondly, they have the cutest pink and white stripe wall for pictures!
  2. Mo's:  If you're an Oregonian and haven't been to Mo's, are you really an Oregonian after all?  There are several locations (even one at the Portland airport!), and we've been going forever.  Make sure to get their clam chowder and garlic toast!
  3. Insomnia Coffee: I love their coffee, and we always need a little boost before we head home.  The shop is adorable if you need to take a break from the day.
  4. Haystack Rock:  You must get up close to Haystack Rock.  Make sure to check when the tides are out because the tide pools are amazing!
  5. Festivals:  My favorite festival at Cannon Beach is the Sandcastle contest.  It takes place in June and the castles people create are mind blowing!
  6. Breweries:  There are several great breweries in Cannon Beach.  Public Coast Brewing (this is random, but have some of your kids applesauce - it's out of this world!), Pelican Brewing, and Bills Tavern and Brew House.  All are kid friendly!
