5 Reasons Why Carpet is a Must Have in Your Home

I can't believe it's almost been 4 years since Ryan and I purchased our first home together.  We had our home built, so we were able to go through the design process which was a lot of fun!  One of our must-haves in our home was carpet.  We had the option of having hardwood throughout, but having little ones we knew we wanted mainly carpet.  Our living room, the playroom, and our entire upstairs is all carpet.

We also love to layer rugs over our carpet in our bedrooms for a fun design touch.  It's another great way to update a space with minimal budget.  With the holidays coming up, everyone is sure to gather around the Christmas tree.  The weather is turning, and cozying up on soft carpeted floors sounds great right about now!  Today, I am sharing 5 reasons why carpet is a must-have in your home with The Carpet & Rug Institute, especially during the holidays!

5 Reasons Why Carpet is a Must Have in Your Home

One - Improves Indoor Air Quality

This one was surprising to me!  I was under the impression that the opposite is true.  Having carpet in your home can help lessen the symptoms of asthma and allergies.  Carpet actually traps particles from the breathing zone.  It also reduces the particles from circulating through the air.  As long as you properly clean your carpet and use a CRI approved vacuum, particles will be removed from the air and kept from breathing in.  Also, look for carpet certified by CRI’s Green Label Plus program, which indicates a low-VOC (volatile organic compound) product for homes, schools and businesses.  With all of the upcoming parties and holiday events, there will be a lot more dust and particles circulating throughout your home.  Having carpet will help minimize any allergens so your guests won't have to worry as much.  CRI has some great tips on what to look for when having your carpets professionally cleaned.

Two - Reduces Noise

How many times have your little ones been woken up from the sounds of shoes against hardwood floors?!  We love having carpet in our home to help reduce noise.  Our girls run through the house a lot, and carpet helps our house stay a little more quiet.

Three - Creates a Warm and Cozy Space

Having carpet throughout your home actually helps retain warmth longer especially in colder climates.  This is also an energy conservation benefit if you think about it!  Our Christmas tree sits in our main living space, which thankfully is carpeted.  The girls love sitting around the tree looking at the ornaments (and trying to guess what toys are wrapped up).  They are much more warm and cozy being able to do this on our carpeted floors.

Four - Adds Style

There are SO many carpet choices to choose from, that we had a tough time picking out the perfect color.  We went with a lighter, neutral color that we've been so happy with.  As I mentioned above, I also love layering area rugs over carpet.  This can quickly change up the look and style of any room.  It would be super fun to add an area rug in a festive pop of color (like red or green) to your holiday decor.  If you're trying to decide on a new carpet for your home, bring home samples to see what looks best.  Head over to CRI's website for tips on selecting the right carpet for you.

Five - Safety

Our girls play hard and are constantly falling on the floor.  I can't imagine not having carpet through most of our home for this reason alone!  This is also super important if you have babies or little ones that are just starting to walk.  They fall a lot!  We also have a Golden Retriever, so hardwood floors are really tough for him to run on.  He often gets a wild hair and goes on a run back and forth several times (do any of your dogs do this too?!).  Being upstairs on our fully carpeted floor allows him to get his energy out without falling.

  1. I love carpets. The only thing is that you should know how to clean them, especially if you have allergies, or you have a carpet in your kids' room. It's the first time I hear that having a carpet can help lessen the symptoms of asthma and different allergies. Yes, carpet traps particles but at the same time, it means that they are still in the carpet so you won't be able to clean them so easy like when cleaning a hardwood floor. And if your child loves to sit on the carpet, even more - if you have a baby at home it's especially important to deep clean the carpet.
Of course, it's better to ask help from a professional to clean the carpet but you can also clean by yourself. I have an irobot, and I love that it cleans the home while I'm gone. But from time to time I deep clean it with different cleaners
