DIY Color Block Glass Vase

DIY Color Block Glass Vase

I have been seeing color block vases and I couldn't believe the insanely high price tag! There is a super inexpensive glass vase that looks just like the color block version at Target. This vase doesn't have the color blocking detail, so I figured I'd try my hand at DIY'ing my own for a fraction of the price! These vases retail from $120-$145 and I picked up the plain glass vase for $20. Add a little painters tape, paint, Mod Podge and viola! A super easy DIY color block glass vase for a fraction of the price of the expensive one.

How To

We'll share here how we created this DIY. It was super simple to make this, it just takes a bit of time to let the paint dry. When you paint on glass, the dry time is actually fairly quick but it needed several coats.

We used an acrylic paint that we grabbed at Target. You can find them all over though! We went with a blue color, but when the paint went on it was too bright. I added a little white to tone it down a bit. The color we used was called 'Spa' but I'm not finding it online. Plain white would look great as well!

Step 1: Tape Off Glass Vase

I used Frog Tape to tape a strip around our glass vase. I thought I would use a level to make it straight but it didn't really work so I eyeballed it. It ended up coming out perfectly straight! We use this tape in many of our painting projects and it works well!

Step 2: Paint!

Use a brush to paint below the taped off portion. You'll also paint the bottom of the vase as well. Turn your vase upside down and this will be super simple! I waited around 30 minutes between coats and this took around 4 coats of paint. You could also try this paint which is made specifically for glass.

Step 3: Seal

I didn't seal our vase at first and realized that the paint chipped off quickly. Don't make this mistake and seal your paint! We used Mod Podge and it is holding up great! You can also try baking your paint on or using a spray on sealant. You'll definitely need to seal or your paint will chip off.

Completed Vase

Here is what our completed vase looks like! I absolutely love the look of this and it was SO easy to DIY. I'm actually thinking about making another one with white as the color block. I couldn't fathom spending that much on a vase and I'm so glad I came up with this DIY solution for less than $25!
