Vertical shiplap is a popular trend in home design and has gained popularity in recent years. It is a stylish and classic yet design that can be used in various ways to add a unique touch to your home's interior. One of the most exciting ways to use vertical shiplap is as a kitchen backsplash. This style can be used to achieve a variety of different looks. From rustic to contemporary, and it is an excellent way to add texture and depth to your kitchen.
We have a large pantry behind our kitchen that has cabinets and a quartz counter. We decided not to add tile backsplash. Instead, we used vertical shiplap as our backsplash and I absolutely love the results!
Here is how our pantry turned out with the vertical shiplap for the backsplash. It was a project that took about a day total and I love how it looks!
When it comes to using vertical shiplap as a kitchen backsplash, there are many factors to consider. First, you'll need to decide on the type of shiplap you want to use. There are many different types of shiplap available, including wood, metal, and vinyl.

We used vertical shiplap in our previous home and loved the look. We did a half wall in our powder bath.
Once you've chosen your shiplap material, you'll need to decide on the direction of the planks. As the name suggests, vertical shiplap is installed vertically, instead of the traditional horizontal orientation. This creates a unique look that can add height to your kitchen and make it feel more spacious. It's also a fresh take on the traditional horizontal shiplap.

For example, if you want a rustic look, you could choose a natural wood shiplap and install it with visible gaps between the planks. This will create a weathered, aged look that is perfect for a farmhouse-style kitchen.
Another benefit of using vertical shiplap as a kitchen backsplash is that it is relatively easy to install. You can do it yourself with a few basic tools and some patience. However, if you're not comfortable doing it yourself, you can always hire a professional to do it for you.
We installed our own vertical shiplap in our kitchen. The most difficult part was cutting around the existing kitchen cabinet molding. Another great benefit is that it is less expensive than tile. We received a quote for tile in our butlers pantry and it was over $2,500. We spent right around $250 for shiplap and paint. I'd say that's saving quite a bit of money!
Vertical shiplap can also be easy to clean as long as use the right paint. We used Sherwin Williams Pure White in a Semi Gloss in their Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel.
When installing vertical shiplap as a kitchen backsplash, it's essential to ensure that it is properly sealed. This will help prevent water damage and make it easier to clean. You can use a clear sealant to protect the shiplap and make it more durable.
For paint, we used Sherwin Williams Pure White (which we had in our previous homes interior and exterior). We used a semi-gloss sheen for the shiplap planks in their Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. We painted them prior to installation.
In addition to being a stylish and practical choice for a kitchen backsplash, vertical shiplap has other benefits as well. For example, it can help to insulate your kitchen and provide some extra soundproofing.
