Today, I have an extremely easy DIY project for you that has been on my list for a little while now! The Ikea Sundvik toddler table and chairs has been one of our favorite purchases for the girls. We've had it for a little over 3 years and it has held up really well. I originally wanted to cover the top with some contact paper, wrapping paper, or wall paper but decided to redo the chairs instead. The total cost to cushion and cover our three chairs was right around $20 (maybe even less since I had some left over fabric). Check out my step by step tutorial on our Ikea toddler chair hack below!
our Ikea Sundvik table and chairs before
our supplies - poly foam, scissors, a screw driver, a sharpie, a staple gun and one yard of fabric
Step 1: If your chairs are already put together, take them apart. Use the seat part of the chair as your stencil. Lay out your poly foam pad. I ended up finding this at Hobby Lobby and they only had a large roll (nothing smaller). Hopefully your craft store will sell individual squares! Lay the seat down on the foam.
Step 2: Use your sharpie to trace the shape of the seat.
Step 4: Cut out the shape of your seat.
Step 5: Lay out your fabric. I purchased one yard for my 3 chairs knowing I'd have a bit left over. The size of the square I cut out was 19 inches by 19 inches. Lay your cut out foam on the non printed side of the fabric, and then lay your chair seat on top.
Step 6: Fold the fabric over and start stapling! I started with the front end of the seat and folded the fabric under to have a clean edge.
Step 7: Fold under the corners and staple the sides of the fabric to the seat. This part was a little tricky and I had to play around with it for a bit to get it to look neat and clean. I also cut some of the excess fabric underneath the folds to reduce some of the bulk under the staples.
Step 8: Finish off the stapling with the back end of the seat. I also had to play with this one a bit to get it right. You'll need to cut some of the excess fabric away here as well. Continue with folding under the fabric so you get a clean edge.
Violá!
The last step is to screw the seat back on to the char. Please note the chair above is put together incorrectly. I purchased a third seat and hadn't put it together, and did so backwards so the top wouldn't screw in. I had to take the whole thing apart and start over. Clearly I didn't read the directions!
It took me around 20 minutes to complete this project! So simple and quick, and if you get sick of the fabric you can easily switch it out. Let me know if you do the Ikea toddler chair hack and how it goes! I'd love to answer any questions you might have as well. Hi there!
Where is the wallpaper from please? Or the branding of it? I would love it in my girls room, but I’m in the UK. I’ll pay shipping if it’s the US - I love it so much!!!
Amazing super helpful!
